Kim Cattrall, Hilary Swank and Mariska Hargitay are all fans of nutritional guru Oz Garcia and now he’s revealing the same secrets he uses for them to you! In his new book, Redesigning 50: The No-Plastic Surgery Guide to 21st-Century Age Defiance, Garcia features a recipe for his “green drink” to help reduce the effects of aging. On his website, he says,

Green drinks are a terrific way to begin your morning or help you over a mid-afternoon hump when your energy may be low. These drinks are also a useful addition to a detox cleanse.

So, why green drinks?? Well, according to him,

Green drinks contain leafy greens, grasses, sprouted grains and green vegetables (organic is best), which infuse your system with easily absorbed vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, as well as help maintain alkalinity in your body. Greens also help to emulsify cholesterol and fat in the body and help to detox the liver.

There are many recipes out there for green drinks but here’s the one he recommends:

GREEN DRINK
Makes 3 cups (2-ounce servings)
1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
3 stalks of celery, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 apple cored and chopped
1/2 cup of fennel (about 1 small fennel, chopped)
1/2 cup of kale (about 2 leaves, chopped)
1/2 cup of rainbow chard (about 2 leaves)
2 to 3 sprigs parsley, chopped

Optional Garnish
1 slice or a squeeze of fresh lemon

Directions

  1. Put the cucumber, celery, apple, and fennel into one bowl and the kale, chard, and parsley into another.
  2. Run all of the ingredients through the feed tube of a high-powered juicer, alternating between the greens and the hard vegetables. This will prevent the juicer from having any difficulty juicing the greens.
  3. Serve immediately in a large glass with a slice or squeeze of lemon. If you’re new to green juices, it may take some time to appreciate the flavor. If that’s the case, dilute the juice with some water and squeeze in a bit more lemon to taste.

If you’re tracking calories, this drink contains a mere 50!

I have to warn you, if you don’t like celery, you’ll want to start with one stalk and work your way up. I personally can’t stand it so one stalk in this drink was plenty for me. Also, you don’t have to be concerned with aging to have this drink. It’s very beneficial for all of us, no matter what our age.
