About a week ago I was making breakfast and happened to look out the window and see two ducks floating in my pool! Now, I’m a HUGE animal lover (and they clearly know we’re plant-based) so I proceeded to yell at Andrew, “DUCKS!!! We have DUCKS!”.

The beauty and grace of these amazing beings are so wondrous and every morning since that day has been like Christmas. I jump out of bed and rush to the window to see if they are there. And almost always, they are!

We’ve even named them Bonnie and Clyde. I don’t know, they somehow seem like outlaws. Just the two of them against the world. I dig it.

And for the past week they’ve been here, they’ve taught me a few things that I want to share with you.

1. Sometimes you need to go with the flow (or the pool ripples).

Bonnie and Clyde don’t mind if the water shifts them in one direction or the other. They just hang out and go where it takes them. Us? We pull, fight and try to course correct on a daily basis. It’s amazing how stressful it is to always try and make things “right”! I don’t know about you but I’m making the decision to let go of the way things “should” be and just accept them as they are.

2. Invest time in taking care of yourself. It shows.

My two feathered friends are gorgeous! They are plump, round and their feathers sparkle as they glide through the water. They’ve gotta be two of the finest duck specimens this side of the Mississippi.

When I pointed this out to my husband, he said, “Well, look how well they take care of themselves! Of course they look great!”. He’s right. These ducks are always relaxing, preening their feathers, taking a nice flight, eating healthy food (they can’t waddle through McDonald’s) or going for a nice swim.

When is the last time YOU did things like this for yourself on a daily basis? I know, I know. We have kids and jobs and families and … stuff! But if we invested just 10 minutes a day practicing this type of extreme self care, it would show up in a big way.

3. Sleep. Often.

Who knew ducks were such big nappers? Cats? Yes. Ducks? Really?!

After a nice long swim, they hop out of the pool, tuck their beaks under their wings and close their eyes for a nice little slumber. Sometimes they don’t even bother to get out of the water! They just sleep right where they are. Brilliant!

The cool thing about sleep is that it reduces stress, helps lower blood pressure, boosts weight loss, improves memory, increases heart health and loads more!

How much do YOU sleep? Me? I love to sleep. It might be one of my favorite things ever. But with a two year old, it isn’t always so easy. However… I’m taking notes from the ducks and squeezing in a 20 minute power nap today. I know it’s gonna feel SO good!

Let’s make magic happen

What have YOU learned from Bonnie and Clyde (the ducks, not the gangsters)? What ONE thing have they inspired YOU to do TODAY? Tell me in the comments below!

Who doesn’t want to eat delicious food that slims and trims your body while boosting your health?

Here are 9 of my favorites:

.
1. Blueberries
Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids (compounds that protect our body from stress). What’s cool is that phytoflavinoids have been shown through several studies to have pharma cologic gastro-protective properties, and have been reported to act as antisecretory, anti-diarrheal, antiulcer, and antioxidant agents. Wowza!

And, because they are anti-inflammatory, they are also great at protecting your body against many chronic diseases!

2. Potatoes
A recent study found that potatoes lower blood pressure in people with hypertension and obesity without increasing weight! That’s great news for all of us potato lovers! And, just one medium potato contains as much dietary fiber as five and a half bananas and even more vitamin C than three avocados.

Finally, new research also shows that potatoes contain more of the mineral selenium than the average child gets from their daily consumption of seeds and nuts. Selenium is an essential mineral that works as an antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E, and helps to fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. You know, the destructive fellas that make your body susceptible to disease and premature aging.

3. Broccoli
Did you know that per serving, broccoli has over 50% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin C and potassium, which helps maintain a healthy nervous system and optimal brain function? It also promotes regular muscle growth and repair.

In addition, broccoli contains phytonutrients that help the body eliminate more toxic compounds and free radicals to help you boost weight loss. If that wasn’t enough, just one cup of broccoli bolsters the immune system with an extremely large dose of beta carotene.

4. Apples
Just one of these babies a day keeps the doctor away but did you know that it also helps to keep you looking great? The secret to the super food antioxidant capacity that apples have is in their skin. That’s right! The skin alone provides 2-6x the antioxidant power of the rest of the apple.

What’s more, just one large apple has 5.7 grams of fiber which is great for cleansing and making sure your digestive system is functioning properly to help you maximize weight loss. Researchers discovered that eating a single apple before meals reduces appetite so you consume fewer calories! Do apples rock or what?

5. Vanilla
Other than the intoxicating smell of vanilla, studies have shown that vanilla extract helps calm and settle nausea and upset stomachs. It also has a soothing effect on people who are dealing with stress and anxiety. I love putting a tiny bit on my wrists and smelling it throughout the day to help keep me calm and focused. Try it!

6. Pineapples
These tropical fellas are one of my favorite foods for many reasons other than just their mouth-watering taste! Pineapples are rich in vitamin C, they can help fight off viruses and colds plus they are full of bromelain which helps break down proteins, reduce swelling and inflammation, lower arthritis and sinus pain, balance out the acidity of your stomach contents, boost your overall immune strength and reduce indigestion and heartburn! Whew!

Make sure you toss one of these babies in your shopping cart today!

7. Tomatoes
One of my all time favorite fruits, tomatoes contain high levels of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that supports the immune system and helps maintain healthy skin and tissue lining. In addition, just one tomato provides 50% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C which helps boost immunity and energy!

Finally, tomatoes are also a rich source of lycopene, an antioxidant which helps neutralize 13 different free radicals which can cause cell damage and trigger cancer if left alone. Who is feeling a yummy pasta sauce or steamy cup of tomato soup for dinner?

8. Spinach
Popeye was one smart dude for noshing on spinach. Just one cup has about 20% of the recommended daily dose of fiber which aids in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains low blood sugar and curbs overeating to help boost weight loss.

In addition, one cup of spinach also has over 56% of the recommended daily dosage of vitamin A which helps protect and strengthen your mucous membranes, respiratory health, urinary and intestinal tract and is also a key component in lymphocytes (white blood cells) that fight infection.

9. Walnuts
I love lightly roasting walnuts and tossing them into my nightly salad because they’re so delish! But did you know that they have the highest antioxidant activity of all nuts? That’s right. These little guys are great for protecting against chronic diseases.

If that wasn’t enough (chronic diseases are a big deal y’all!), walnuts contain healthy fats which help to bust that frustrating belly fat!

Check out these 5 ways to sleep your way skinny starting tonight!

The post 5 Ways To Sleep Your Way Skinny appeared first on | Cynthia Pasquella, Celebrity Nutritionist, The Transformational Nutritionist™.

What if getting skinny was as simple as getting enough sleep? Seriously? You bet! Check out these 5 ways to sleep your way skinny starting tonight!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep is essential for a person’s health and wellbeing. Yet millions of people don’t get enough and suffer from numerous sleep problems.

In fact, more than 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different types of sleep disorders! That’s a lot of sleep we’re missing out on!

Now here’s the thing… it’s not like all you have to do is sleep 12 hours a night and the weight will fall off. Instead, it’s what’s happening when you’re sleep-deprived that impacts your ability to drop the pounds.

Researchers have found that lack of sleep directly impacts your sensitivity to insulin, a hormone that helps control blood sugar. And, insulin insensitivity is directly linked to obesity.

Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when participants were sleep-deprived, you burn fewer calories!

And if that wasn’t enough, another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants who slept only 5.5 hours a night increased their nighttime snacking and chose high-carbohydrate snacks over healthier options.

To get a better, longer nights sleep, start implementing these 5 tips:

1. Stop eating two to three hours before your bedtime. If you’re body is trying to digest food, you won’t be able to fully relax, fall asleep, or stay asleep.

2. Eliminate fried and fatty foods, refined carbs, and limit spicy foods before bedtime. The effects of these foods can really interfere with your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

3. If you’re hungry after dinner, enjoy a light snack two hours before bedtime. Your snack should contain mostly carbohydrates with a little bit of protein to increase the availability of tryptophan (an amino acid that helps induce sleep) to your brain. A sliced apple with an ounce of peanut butter is ideal!

4. Avoid alcohol before bedtime (or completely!!). Although it may help you fall asleep quickly, it also disrupts your sleeping patterns and leaves you feeling un-rested in the morning. Aim to have your last drink at least 5 hours before you snuggle in.

5. This may seem obvious, but avoid caffeine before bed! Caffeinated foods, teas, and other beverages delay your sleep and cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. Caffeine stays in your body for 8 – 12 hours after you drink it so keep this in mind as you reach for that last cup!

Let’s make magic happen!

Which one tip will YOU implement TODAY to be well on your way to sleeping yourself skinny? Tell me in the comments below!

Today is Martin Luther King Day and in honor of this extraordinary leader, and his “I Have a Dream” Speech, I started my day thinking about the dreams that I have.

For myself.

For my loved ones.

For this planet and every living being on it.

My Top 8 Dreams

1 – I dream of a day where every being, everywhere, finally feels free. Inside and out.

2 – I dream of massive embracing of community and understanding that we do not have to go it alone.

3 – I dream of no one’s dream being too big. Too unrealistic. Too bold.

4 – I dream of a world where fresh food and glowing health is abundant for everyone.

5 – I dream of every woman, man and child being happy in their own skin and proud of their body.

6 – I dream of no one being afraid or ashamed of who they are or where they came from.

7 – I dream of a world where no one travels to the top of a mountain to “find themselves” but rather that they never lose that exquisite connection with who they are, what they want and why they’re here.

8 – I dream of a shift where we all fully embrace love, deny hate and realize we are all one.

What are your dreams?

Now, let’s make magic happen! Share at least one of your dreams in the comments below.

Believe me when I say this can send a huge message to the Universe and start a revolutionary shift in every life on this planet.

Do you want a radical new way to set (and accomplish) all your goals in the new year?

One that doesn’t involve day planners, sacrifice or deprivation?

If so, you’ve come to the right place.

We’re in the middle the first month of 2013 and I’m knee deep in planning how this year is going to go down.

While most people set goals based on the amount of money they want to make or how much weight they want to lose, I’m going about it a little differently.

I’m starting with the experience I want to have, not the things I want to do. (Or as Vishen Lakhiani would say, “the end not the mean“).

And yes, I’m setting financial goals for my business as well as other things in my life but I’m not being driven by them. Whoa… that’s a radical thought. It’s a bit scary and a lot refreshing at the same time!

Instead, I’m focusing on how I want to feel this year. How I want to live.

I’ve chosen three words to guide me this year in all areas of my life.

They are: Grace, Peace and Love.

I want everything I do this year to be filled with one or all of those things or I’m choosing not to do it.

YOU can do this too. I fact, I HIGHLY encourage it.

Instead of setting a goal for losing 60 pounds, set a goal for how you want to feel every day while doing it. Then make that FEELING your focus!

If the numbers on the scale are getting smaller but you’re starving or unhappy with the food you “have” to eat, then that’s not cool. It doesn’t properly feed your soul and that’s just as important if not MORE important than properly feeding your body.

Are you REALLY going to be able to maintain weight loss using this technique? Yes, you might be smaller but are you happier? If not, do things differently.

There are foods you can eat that burn fat and boost weight loss and taste amazing (if you don’t know what they are, check out my free Look and Feel Great Naked Kit or pick up a copy of my new book, The Hungry Hottie Cookbook).

There are jobs you can do that will light your fire and bring in income.

You don’t have to settle. You do have to live life full out.

Start with how you want to feel.

Grace, peace and love,

Let’s make magic happen in the comments! Please share the top three words that describe how YOU want to FEEL this year!

Before we get into the “3 Ways to Radically Transform Without Struggle or Deprivation“, I have a confession to make.

I haven’t been honest.

There have been some things going on behind the scenes.

There is a HUGE shift happening for me right now. As Bob Dylan would say, “The times they are a-changin”.

I’ve felt it for a long time now.

I’ve just been afraid to step into my truth and play a bigger game. I’ve been afraid to pull back the curtain and let you peek behind it.

YET… I KNOW that the method I use/teach/preach works! I’ve seen it with thousands and thousands of people over the years.

I’ve given some – like the science and psychology of weight loss. And spiritual teachings to transform your thoughts and life. But I can’t honestly sit here and say that I’ve played full out.

And that’s not cool.

So why have I held back?

The same reason we all hold back when it comes to doing anything. I was afraid. Afraid of being judged, laughed at, dismissed.

But I am at a crossroads and I realize as I ask YOU (and thousands of women like you) to step up and step out and transform your lives that I must do the same.

It’s time to live my truth.

What’s crazy is that ALL roads point to this path for me.

Lately, the Universe has been smacking me upside the head with signs. Things like:

an OVERWHELMING (seriously, thousands) response to my upcoming interview with spiritual hero, Marianne Williamson

a FLOOD of beautiful, honest, vulnerable questions from you for me to ask Marianne on your behalf all around abundance, spirituality, something “bigger” – WOW!

random comments from women – like this one left on my blog post two days ago, “Well, thanks to you I am on my way to being physically healthy and fit! Now I just need help figuring out how to become healthier emotionally, mentally and spiritually.” I hear you, beautiful sister! I hear you!

So… it’s time to live my truth. To walk my talk (in public not just my private life). To serve you in a bigger, better way. To inspire radical transformation in women everywhere.

To kick off this life-changing, career altering moment, I put together a list of “3 Ways to Radically Transform Your Body and Life Without Struggle or Deprivation“.

Let’s get this party started:

1. Relax into the flow. This isn’t the same as go with the flow. Go with the flow implies that you go along with whatever comes your way. You do what everyone else is doing. You don’t buck the system.

I’m encouraging you to relax into the flow that you create when you step up and declare to the Universe (aka God, Buddha, Source, Christ, Divine Mother, Allah, Infinite Consciousness, etc. etc. etc.) that you’re ready for something more.

Be warned that this “something more” might come quickly or in surprising ways. When it does, relax into it and surrender to the shift it causes.

2. Want more. There is no longer any time left for settling. There’s no time to say “I will do/have/be that when I get older/retire/save money/make a plan.

Your time is now. Go big. Go HUGE. But go. And know that everything and anything you want is yours for the taking. You simply have to want it.

3. Believe you can have it. Napoleon Hill is famous for saying, “Whatever you conceive and believe, you can achieve.” Mad props to Napoleon for speaking the truth, yo.

The universe absolutely, positively, undeniable supports you in anything you believe. You were created entitled to infinite abundance.

But we lose that belief. We lose that connection. We start to believe that getting a job/making money/losing weight is supposed to be hard. That we’re supposed to struggle. That it’s normal. It’s not.

So, I want to now challenge YOU to step up and play bigger.

What do YOU want?

What will YOU choose to believe?

How will YOU relax into the flow?

And WHY, OH WHY haven’t you done this yet?

Please leave a comment below answering these challenge questions (one or all of them) and tell me how I can better support you moving forward!

Let’s make magic (and miracles, as my friend Gabby Bernstein would say) happen!

So much love, respect and gratitude for you,

This morning as I poured myself a hot cup of green tea with jasmine, I immediately remembered how I used to be completely addicted to coffee which led me down a path of remembering when I used to be completely addicted to everything – food, drugs, relationships, you name it and how far I’ve come since then.

I certainly didn’t do it alone but I did it.

I devoured books like A Course In Miracles, Remember, Be Here Now and You Can Heal Your Life.

I studied at some of the countries most prestigious institutions and worked with some amazing teachers.

I adopted a practice of Kundalini yoga and began eating a plant-based diet.

I radically transformed my body and my life because I believed I could. I believed in miracles.

Which is why I’m so thrilled to kick off 2013 with an exciting announcement

My dear friend Gabrielle Bernstein just launched her third book and it’s a doozy! May Cause Miracles: A 40-Day Guidebook of Subtle Shifts for Radical Change, is now available in a beautiful hardcover and as an e-book.

Can it really cause miracles?

Absolutely! May Cause Miracles is a six-week guide that enlightens, inspires, and empowers. Gabrielle helps you clear through blocks and discover authentic happiness in every aspect of your life. I’m personally going through it and it’s causing some major shifts for me!

With the structure and support provided by May Cause Miracles, you’ll transform your relationships to friends, family, romantic partners, work and money, your bodies, and the world.

By adding up subtle shifts, you’ll create long-lasting, miraculous change. (Translation: Did you make a New Year’s resolution? THIS is how to make it stick.)

A little about Gabrielle

If you’re not yet familiar with Gabrielle, she was just featured as a new thought leader on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. (Seriously, what’s up with all my buds being on Oprah lately?! I’m SO proud of them!) She’s the best-selling author of Spirit Junkie: A Radical Road to Self-Love and Miracles (recently out in paperback!) and Add More Ing to Your Life: A Hip Guide to Happiness.

Gabby is an incredible inspirational speaker and teacher of A Course in Miracles—and believe me when I say she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk.
